Spitzer Resigns: McGeeving The Death Of Another McMaverick

The sheriff of Wall Street is gone, run out of town as yet another example of a politician promising to be one thing while proving in the end to be another. The ironic contrast of the following campaign video and the current trainwreck that is Eliot Spitzer will be lost on no one. Hypocrisy Charlie Brown, hypocrisy...before and after.

Here's The Before:

And Here's The After: The resignation announcement:

What They're Saying Around The Rest Of The Web
Aides Divided On Spitzer Resignation: "Top aides to Gov. Eliot Spitzer said
Tuesday morning that they expect the governor to resign his office,
although the timing of the resignation remains uncertain," the New York
Times reports.
After a report that Gov. Eliot Spitzer had
patronized a prostitution ring, officials in Albany greeted the news
with shock, and some on Wall Street, a frequent target of his
investigations as attorney general, were unsympathetic.
[1]

"We
had no interest at all in the prostitution ring until the thing with
Spitzer led us to learn about it," said one Justice Department
official. Will Giuliani, Bloomberg Run For Gov? "Mayor Bloomberg has
long denied wanting to run for governor, but the job may be looking a
little enticing
may be looking a little enticing if Gov. Spitzer resigns in his pay-for-sex scandal," the NY Daily News notes.[1]

Spitzer
should also resign and may very well go to jail. Like Vitter he's
looking at charges for paying for prostitution, unlike Vitter he's
looking at money laundering and violating the Mann Act (arranging for
the transport of a prostitute across state lines).

New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer announces his resignation as his wife Silda
looks on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in his offices in New York City
. Lt. Governor David Paterson will succeed him effective Monday, March 17.
[3]
A great guy, huh? You are an idiot. He cheated on his wife, disgraced
his completely innocent daughters, and hurt everyone who has ever
supported him. The investigation probably was politically motivated,
and I don't think prostitution should be illegal, much less a federal
matter, however, Spitzer did this to himself. He is a hypocrite and a
scumbag, and anyone who tries to defend him with comments like: David
Vitter didn't resign! or What about Larry Craig? are the lowest form of
party hacks.
[4]
Following the shocking revelation that New York Governor, Eliot
Spitzer, had been caught in a prostitution sting, Jack Cafferty put the
question to his viewers Should Eliot Spitzer resign? Jack felt that CNN
had devoted too much time to the scandal, goes over the laundry list of
recent political sex scandals then has fun with a few e-mails.

New
York Gov. Eliot Spitzer is expected to submit his resignation to the
New York General Assembly as early as Monday night after allegations
surfaced earlier in the day that he is "Client 9," named in a federal
prostitution case, sources told FOX News.
[5]

NEW
YORK (WABC) -- Eliot Spitzer has resigned as New York's governor,
effective Monday. The announcement marked a stunning fall from power
for Spitzer, disgraced by news linking him to a high-priced
prostitution ring. He announced his resignation from his New York City
office just after 11:30 a.m. He will be replaced by Lt. Gov. David
Paterson, who will become New York's first black governor.
[6]

OTOH,
you can't become an enabler by constantly turning a blind eye when your
spouse is leaving behind debris that used to be other people's careers
and/or lives. Spitzer put a LOT of bad people in jail, and he
went after some truly bad people. He also, as anyone paying attention
knows, went after people he had a personal vendetta against, or who
were vulnerable to him. I'm not saying that Elliot Spitzer didn't love
his family, or that he didn't root for the Yankees, or anything like
that.
[7]
NEW YORK (CBS) If Gov. Eliot Spitzer opts to roll the dice and not
resign, state Republican leadership will"force him to go all-in and
call for his impeachment from office, according to a state Assemblyman,
who admitted he asked the governor to step down. Spitzer's resignation
is imminent, sources tell CBS 2 HD political reporter Marcia Kramer,
but insiders say he's going to use the resignation as a bargaining chip
to cut a deal with federal prosecutors.
[8]
Gov. Eliot Spitzer Eliot Spitzer, embroiled in allegations that he
patronized a high-priced prostitution service, remained sequestered in
his Fifth Avenue apartment Tuesday, reportedly pondering his political
future amid growing calls for him to resign.
[9]
The prostitution scandal, some said, was too much to overcome. White
House press secretary Dana Perino responded to Spitzer"s resignation by
repeating that President Bush views it as a "sad situation" and has
Spitzer and his family "in his thoughts and prayers."
[10]

Democratic Assemblyman Dov Hikind said that the mood in Albany was "disbelief" and
that lawmakers were waiting for Spitzer to resign. "People are looking
in the air like 'Is this really happening?' " he said. "It's wildly
unbelievable. This is beyond science fiction." Douglas Muzzio, a
Manhattan-based political consultant, said: "He's got to resign. He
can't weather the impeachment proceedings" and he added that Spitzer
could be using his resignation as a "political bargaining chip."
[11]

The four defendants charged in the case last week were charged with
violating the federal Mann Act, a 1910 law that outlaws traveling
across state lines for prostitution. Sources told CNBC that Spitzer
does not plan to resign until he manages to organize a plea deal that
will allow him to avoid prosecution under the Mann Act.
[12]
Eliot Spitzer has remained governor longer than most people expected
after 4 pm ET yesterday. When the news broke that the former prosecutor
who once bragged of busting a prostitution ring had recently decided to
patronize another, most people assumed that his admission would be
quickly followed by an exit from the political stage. Stunned
politicians in both parties last night called on Gov. Spitzer Gov.
Spitzer to resign. "I don't think anyone remembers anything like this.
[13]
Top aides to Governor Eliot Spitzer said Tuesday morning that they
expect the governor to resign his office, although the timing of the
resignation remains uncertain. Lieutenant Governor David Paterson and
his staff have begun laying the groundwork for him to take over as
governor and are reaching out to members of the Legislature, the aides
said.
[14]

TLS TLS said. He should be forced to resign as he is not likely to step down on
his own. He probably learned of the prostitution ring from Anthony
Watson CEO of HIP Health Plan of NY whom has been backing Spitzer with
HIP funds so that he could approve the HIP & GHI for profit
conversion. Those guys at HIP are dogs they have both in house and
outside hookers they patronize.
[15]

Spitzer's short 14 months in office has been surrounded in controversy.
I'm not sure if I think he should resign but he just may have to. For
years Spitzer was gunning for people who broke the law and now he's
done it himself. If this were an affair he was having I would say it
was a personal issue between him and his wife. Prostitution is a crime
and he spent close to $4,000 for a woman. $4,000!! What would she have
to do to earn that amount of money?? I digress, sorry.
[16]
Jean, any illegal behavior by an elected official should be cause for
removal from office. If the incident had happened in Nevada where it is
legal, then I would agree that it is between him and his wife, but if
happened in D.C. As a former Attorney General Spitzer was very aware
his actions were against the law, and he should at the very least
resign his office, if not be prosecuted for soliciting prostitution.
[16]

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who crusaded against corporate
malfeasance, apparently lived in a glass house. He should immediately
resign in the wake of his near-admission that he was caught up in a
reported prostitution scandal.
[15]

I think that Elliot Spitzer should have known better. His apology and resignation are enough. I wouldn't punish him any further.
[16]
Sen. Vitter's number appeared on a prostitution phone list allegedly.
Senator Vitter remains in his seat currently. Gov. Spitzer, allegedly
and as of this moment, made a phone call for this prostitute. OK. So
now there are calls for his resignation.

ALBANY
Gov. Eliot L. Spitzer, facing potential criminal charges for his
involvement with a high-end prostitution ring, was under growing
pressure Monday night to resign.
[19] evidence that the opinion of Newsday is: Eliot Spitzer should resign for his involvement in a prostitution ring.[20]
I don't see why Elliot Spitzer is resigning but I think that the public will appreciate it. [16]
Gov. Eliot Spitzer is set to resign Wednesday, sources tell CBS station
WCBS-TV, but insiders say he's going to use the resignation as a
bargaining chip to cut a deal with federal prosecutors and he won't
step down until that happens.
[21] Gov. Eliot Spitzer apologized Monday after it was reported he was linked to a prostitution ring, but he did not resign.[21]

Prostitution
is ILLEGAL. He was involved with ILLEGAL activity. Just as R-Senator
Larry Craig resigned for propositioning a man in the bathroom. so
should D-Gov. Eliot Spitzer resign for this.

NEW YORK - Pressure mounted Tuesday on New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer to
resign because of a prostitution scandal that has South Florida ties.
